Founded in 1957, Joseph Heler Ltd is the UK's largest independent cheesemaker.  Family owned and run, we are based in Hatherton, near the town of Nantwich, and specialise in producing British regional cheese using traditional techniques. 

 

Our story

 

Cheesemaking has been in the Heler family for four generations & began with Joseph Heler's grandmother making one block of Cheshire cheese each day.  It was some years later that she imparted her knowledge to her grandson, who then developed a passion for cheesemaking that was never to leave him.  This passion led Joseph Heler to set up his own business in 1957.

 

Originally making 40lb cylindrical unpasteurised Cheshire cheese, Joseph Heler quickly developed a reputation for making consistently high quality cheese, making his breakthrough in 1960 by winning 8 Championships in national shows.

 

The company continually expanded and in the early 1990's opened a further creamery to specialise in the manufacture of a whole range of British regional cheese - from Red Leicester & Double Gloucester to crumbly Lancashire and Wensleydale.

 

Nowadays, the company is run by the founder's youngest son, Mike Heler, and has a focus on blending tradition with innovation, entering into new markets & operations but still only taking milk from local farms.  The Heler name still guarantees only the highest quality products. 

 

Our cheese

 

Joseph Heler Ltd produces over 40 different types of cheese;

 

English Territorials

Our core range includes Red Leicester, Double Gloucester, Lancashire, Wensleydale, Caerphilly, Cheddar and our multi award-winning crumbly Cheshire cheese.  We also produce smoked versions of our Red Leicester & Cheddar.

 

British Continentals

Joseph Heler also produce continental-style cheese, including Gruyere, Italian Style, Provolone & Emmental.

 

Traditional Cheese

Alongside our modern cheeserooms runs the traditional Laurels dairy.  It is here that we produce our traditional clothbound cheese - White, Coloured & Blue Cheshire, along with our Hatherton cheese, a White Cheshire blended with fresh spring onions.

 

Low, Half & Reduced Fat Cheese

Joseph Heler Ltd have been leading the way in development of low, half & reduced fat cheese, winning the Queens Award for Enterprise in 2001, numerous awards at national cheese shows and being first to market with a Reduced Fat Red Leicester style cheese in 2009.
